Celebrating LGBT+ History Month - A Tribute to Our Past and Future

by Trish Murray 04 Feb 2025 0 Comments

February is a time for the LGBTQ+ community to come together to celebrate LGBT+ History Month! This month reminds us of the struggles, achievements, and enduring spirit of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout history.

What is LGBT+ History Month?

Celebrating 20 years, LGBT+ History Month started in the United Kingdom in 2005 but has since grown to be celebrated in many places around the world. The month is about promoting equality and shining a light on the wonderful contributions that LGBTQ+ people have made to society. Each year, there is a unique theme that highlights different parts of LGBTQ+ history and culture, with 2025’s being Activism and Social Change, focusing on the social activists who have helped shape and create social change within our society.

Why Recognition Matters

LGBT+ History Month is important because it creates opportunities for learning and celebration. By diving into the stories and experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals, we can work together to build a more inclusive community. This month encourages us to reflect on key moments in history, like the Stonewall Riots in the US, and recognize inspiring figures such as Mark Ashton, Anne Lister, and Alan Turing, along with the mother of Pride Marsha P. Johnson, and Harvey Milk; to name but a few! Their courage reminds us of the hard work that has gone into the fight for rights and acceptance for hundreds of years.

Let’s Celebrate Our Achievements

This month is as much about celebrating our victories as it is about remembering our challenges! From the groundbreaking legalisation of same-sex marriage to the increased representation in media and politics, we have so much to be proud of. These accomplishments highlight how far we’ve come, but they also remind us that our journey for equality continues.

Looking Forward Together

As we celebrate this vibrant month, we also take time to think about the challenges still faced by the LGBTQ+ community worldwide, like discrimination and lack of representation. By honouring our history, we can inspire future generations to continue the important work towards equality and justice.

Conclusion

My conclusion for this month is to have a retrospective of the lives gone before, celebrate those we have for our new generation, and look towards the future where global recognition and acceptance is the norm.

I want to honour the people who were trailblazing in their field, without shame. For me the Larry’s, Danny’s and John’s stand tall, as visible performers. Men who faced ridicule over the years for showing their own personalities.

To celebrate the representation we have now, with our incredible LGBTQ+ athletes, actors, singers and personalities, and our very own Drag Race UK on the Beeb!.

And finally, to the future, a future where we can travel the world without fear of persecution. A world where gay marriage is just marriage, where 2 people sharing an intimate moment, is just 2 people sharing an intimate moment, and where every individual is accepted and valued for their life and contribution to this wonderful world.

Let us celebrate the incredible legacy of those who fought for LGBTQ+ rights, while encouraging all of us to keep pushing for positive change. Let’s take this time to learn, celebrate, and lift each other up as we work hand in hand toward a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone

Happy LGBT+ History Month from us all at Nice 'n' Naughty

Love Phil x
